Effects of Auxin and Sucrose on Cell Growth and Production of Phenolic Compounds in Cell Suspension Culture of Panax ginseng C . A . Meyer

Abstract
This study was carried out to find out the proper culture conditions such as levels of auxins, sucrose and culture periods for the production of phenolic compounds through the cell suspension culture of ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer). Cell growth decreased in order of 2,4-D, IBA, and IAA. PAL activity, which exhibited adverse trends to that of cell growth, was the highest on IAA medium and the lowest on the 2,4-D medium. The fact that phenolic contents/flask decreased in order of 2,4-D (6.22§¶), IAA (4.27§¶), IBA (4.10§¶), showed a possibility that IAA, a natural auxin, can replace the synthetic auxin. As IAA concentrations were raised, cell growth and phenolic contents/flask increased and showed the high level (3.83g, 5.01§¶, respectively) at 10©ùM. The higher levels of sucrose were added in the media, the lower the cell growth was. Maximum content of phenolics/flask was obtained after 3 weeks culture in the medium added with 5% sucrose.
